40% More

Since the election of Donald Trump…

French’s 20-ounce container of yellow mustard comes with banner boasting “40% More.” Below that, in much smaller print, it adds, “Than Our 14-oz.”

French’s marketers could just as well have gone with a generic, though still useful, “20 is 40% More Than 14.” As a sort of a public service message, I guess: helping yellow mustard buyers to learn their percentages.

They wouldn’t be trying to create the impression that you are getting 40% more for the same price, would they? That was my first impression, quickly dismissed on reading the fine print.

Another ploy is the Buy One, Get One deal, which some stores honor in spirit and in fact. Other stores, I have observed, simply raise the price of the initial purchase to offset the one (sometimes two) freebie(s). How dumb do these people think those people are?
